“In this final year of the Anzac Centenary, it is important to pay tribute to the more than 50,000 Australians who fought in Gallipoli in 1915, where the Anzac legend was born, and those who served with honour in all theatres of war,” Alex Hawke said.
“On Anzac Day, I encourage locals to take a moment to reflect and recognise the courage shown by men and women who have served our nation and defended our interests so that we can enjoy the many freedoms we have today.”
The Anzac Centenary commemorates the First World War (2014–2018). Since the first convoy of servicemen left the shores of Albany in 1914, almost two million men and women have worn with pride the uniforms of the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force. On Anzac Day, we remember them.
“Across Australia and around the world, Australians will attend services to salute the bravery, mateship and sacrifice of the men and women who have served for more than a century,” Alex Hawke said.
“We also recognise the many service men and women who are currently serving overseas. We owe our service personnel an immeasurable amount of thanks and I encourage all Australians to participate in Anzac Day commemorations to acknowledge those who have served and continue to serve our country.”
Occasions such as Anzac Day can be difficult for some veterans and their families. Those affected can call the Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service which is available 24 hours a day on 1800 011 046.
