Australians Celebrate Harmony Week, 15–21 March

‘Everyone belongs’ is the message across Australia this week as communities, schools, sports clubs and workplaces participate in Harmony Week celebrations from 15 to 21 March.

Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, Alex Hawke, said Harmony Week brings people from all backgrounds together to celebrate our cultural diversity, and the shared values that transcend cultural differences and bring us together as Australians.

“More than 1600 Harmony Week events have been registered on the Harmony website, showing high levels of community participation and support for our harmonious multicultural society,” Minister Hawke said.

“These events, which range from sporting events and cultural celebrations, to classroom activities in schools and workplace morning teas, all contribute to a sense of belonging for all,” he said.

“Our success in fostering a cohesive, culturally diverse society is one of our nation’s greatest achievements, underwritten by our shared values of democracy, freedom and the rule of law; that all people are equal and should have equality of opportunity regardless of their cultural background, gender or religious beliefs.

“It is these values that bind us together and attract migrants from all corners of the globe,” Minister Hawke said.

Since 1999, Australians have been celebrating and promoting the benefits of our multicultural and multi-faith diversity, with more than 88,000 Harmony events hosted Australia-wide in that time.

“I want to thank everyone who hosts and attends Harmony Week events, celebrating our diversity and ensuring Australia continues to be an inclusive society where everyone belongs,” Minister Hawke said.
