Celebrating Australian citizenship on Australia Day
This Australia Day marks a momentous occasion for more than 12,000 people who are expected to become Australian citizens at one of more than 430 citizenship ceremonies being held across Australia.
Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs Alex Hawke joined the Australian community in welcoming and congratulating these new Australians.
“Australian citizenship is a common bond that unifies all Australians,” Mr Hawke said.
“Every person conferred with Australian citizenship pledges their loyalty to Australia and its people, and the values that unite our multicultural society.
“A citizenship ceremony is an important event in every new citizen’s life and being able to attend one on Australia Day adds extra significance,” he said.
“Australia Day is a time for all Australians to reflect on our history, respect one another and celebrate our nation.
“Australians can be particularly proud this year to reflect on the resilience of our society and the way we have pulled together in the face of fires, floods and a global pandemic.
“This includes people from all walks of life, and from a diverse range of multicultural backgrounds.
“Australia becomes stronger with every person who takes the step of becoming an Australian citizen.
“I commend and congratulate every person who has taken this important step today,” he said.
