Alex Hawke MP, Federal Member for Mitchell, says Australians are disappointed in the ongoing division and dysfunction that we have all seen in Canberra.
“All Australians are disappointed about what they are seeing from this government. They are only thinking about themselves and not about the issues facing families, retirees and small business people”, said Alex Hawke.
“I have had so many Labor voters tell me how disappointed they are in a government that has descended into chaos.
“As Tony Abbott has said, we are a great people, a great nation and we are being let down by a bad government that is getting worse.
“My message to the people of Mitchell is that it does not have to be this way.
“Like all the members of the Coalition team, I am focused on talking to people throughout Mitchell about our Real Solutions plan that will deliver a strong, prosperous economy and a safe, secure Australia”.
“Our plan will unleash Australia’s economic potential and create one million new jobs within five years. We will take pressure off families and abolish the carbon tax, we will help small businesses by cutting $1 billion a year in red tape and we will strengthen the economy by bringing the budget back under control.
“Our plan will help families with cost of living pressures and allow them to plan their futures with confidence.
“No matter when the election is, I will be working everyday talking to residents throughout Mitchell about the Coalition’s positive plans and how we can make our country a better place”, concluded Alex Hawke.

Alex Hawke MP, Federal Member for Mitchell, spoke in the House of Representatives this morning following the sudden death of Crowne Plaza Norwest Managing Director Minhas Zulfiqar in Karachi, Pakistan last night. Mr Zulfiqar was the victim of an aggravated robbery outside of an ATM in that city.
“Minhas Zulfiqar was a pillar of our community, a man who gave of himself for the betterment of all those in our community. Minhas was very generous when it came to community service and worthy causes,”
“Getting to know him personally, he was a warm and peaceful person who was a standard bearer for successful migration from Pakistan to Australia, founding a business, becoming an owner of some prominent hotels in Sydney including the Crowne Plaza Norwest,”
“It was also an institution that he used to successfully fundraise for many charities and do much good for our community. Whether that be the Inala Cherrybrook facility for the disabled community, the flood relief, fundraisers for Pakistan, the Norwest Crowne Plaza hotel was always at the forefront of worthy fundraising and initiatives to do good for our community,”
“This is a great tragedy and I know I speak for all in the Mitchell community when I offer our sincere condolences to his wife Razia, his sons and his extended family.” Alex Hawke said.

Alex Hawke MP, Federal Member for Mitchell, said that the passing of a Coalition motion in the Senate calling for the fair indexation of military superannuation would be welcomed by many veterans in Mitchell.
“The passing of the Coalition’s motion by the Senate today in support of fair indexation for Australia’s 57,000 military superannuants is a clear message to the Prime Minister and the Government she leads.
“The Gillard Labor Government can no longer hide from its 2007 pre-election commitment to support fair indexation.
“We need real action on this issue sooner rather than later. This is an issue that I am particularly passionate about and one is raised again and again in the many conversations I have with veterans in our community, Alex Hawke said.
“Today’s motion won’t of itself lift pensions, but it is a powerful vote of confidence for fair indexation and a powerful vote of no confidence in the Gillard Labor Government.
“Labor must now stop delaying the consideration of the Veterans’ Affairs Legislation Amendment Bill 2012, where the Coalition has proposed Fair Indexation amendments, and finally live up to its 2007 pre-election position of supporting Fair Indexation.
“I know that while veterans in Mitchell will welcome this motion in support of fair indexation, the only way to see it enacted is to change the government at the next election,” Alex Hawke concluded.
Below: Copy of Coalition motion agreed to in the Senate today.
That the Senate:
a) notes that the average annual DFRDB military superannuation pension in 2011-12 was $24,603;
b) condemns the Gillard Labor Government for Its ongoing and stubborn refusal to grant 57,000 Australian military superannuants and their families a fair go;
c) denounces the Labor Party for misleading veterans before the 2007 election into believing that Labor would actually deliver fair indexation, a point highlighted by Senator Lundy and Minister Kelly in their letter to former finance minister Tanner of 14 September 2009; and
d) criticises the Government for its ongoing failure to schedule a time for the Senate to consider the Veterans’ Affairs Legislation Amendment Bill 2012 and thus denying the Senate the opportunity to debate and vote on the Coalition’s amendments to provide fair indexation for these men and women who have served their nation.
