The Morrison Government is delivering on its commitment to address the unacceptably high rates of suicide among Australian Defence Force members and veterans.
We have introduced legislation to establish the National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention.
The National Commissioner will have powers broadly equivalent to a Royal Commission, but will be a permanent office that can continually monitor the implementation of its own recommendations to ensure long-term solutions are delivered, while also being able to examine new issues which may arise over time.
The Morrison Government will ensure that Australians will be among the first in the world to get access to a vaccination against coronavirus, should current medical trials prove it to be successful, safe and effective.
If trials of the vaccine prove successful we will manufacture and supply vaccines straight away under our own steam and make it free for Australians.
Military history rightly possesses a powerful hold over Australians. We have been forever captured by the tragedy of Gallipoli, which sparked a legend and helped to forge our nation’s identity. But just as important to Australia’s destiny, our place in our region and understanding of who we are was victory in the Pacific. On the 75th anniversary of the end of the war in the Pacific, we should ask how many of us truly understand how that titanic struggle for survival defined Australia’s destiny and our place within our Pacific family?
